Anyone tried sand with a saucer on top?

Best of both worlds or overkill?

No dry sand with a clay saucer laid on the top. That way you should get the thermal properties from both the sand and the saucer helping to stabilise the heat and reduce the use of fuel not use more???

Any heat sink is going to increase the fuel consumption, sand & clay saucers will be better in this regard than water, but if you want efficiency then just foil the pan.

just stick to a saucer, or just use the empty water pan if the outside temp is hot. If you arent battling the elements you dont need to try to hard.
