UDS Baffle

Postby custardavenger » 05 Jul 2014, 12:00

Hi Chaps

I am currently modifying my UDS to make it a little easier to use. I've bought a 10l bowl to place between the coals and the grill. This is partly to add moisture/stability and partly because when I baste the meat I won't end up putting half the coals out.

So my question is. Is it worth adding a baffle between the coals and the water bowl/grill?

I ask as one way to mount the bowl would make this very easy.

I don't use water anymore in the UDS, made it harder to keep the temp steady and I've seen no detrimental effect to the food. for a baffle I use a coal grate from an old BBQ and wrap foil over it and put it over my coal basket

Normally baffles are used to create indirect heat zones and to prevent hot and cold spots

Ahh. As someone else said, does the water bowl not do that anyway?

Yes it would, however an intermediate baffle mighty help reduce the evaporation and the need for constant top ups

Thanks for the replies. So but this I am going to make a baffle that will also act as a shelf for the water bowl. That way I can try all options and work out what works best. Ta

Ahh. Wud never have thought of that as I put a separate pan in the water pan. So I guess I have a baffle and water pan anyway. Thanks.
