As this weekend looks pretty good weather wise I'll be getting the BBQ out. I'm going to try a pork shoulder portion I had in the freezer which is only about 1.5 kg, some ribs I got from the butchers (which unfortunately were cut in to portions) and a couple of chicken portions from the butcher.
My thoughts were to try the pork with a bit of seasoning for my first go and see how it comes out. I would like to get it as close to pulled pork as I can.
I will then use a JD rub I have on the ribs and cook them slowly with the pork.
For the chicken I was going to use the JD rub as well but cook faster and add BBQ sauce at the end.
My questions are a) how long do you think the pork / ribs take if cooking off from direct heat and kept around 230°f and b) could I part slow cook the chicken and then add the BBQ and finish on the heat?

Anything you can do to make the cook indirect will really help, especially with a small piece like this. Cook time will be roughly 1 to 1.5 hours per half kg. I would try to get the ribs in a foil pan and possibly cover after the first hour to prevent them drying out. I would suspect they will take 3 to 4 hours in total if covered
You could start the chicken slow and indirect and then finish over the coals at the end to crisp the skin whilst you rest the pork
