I'd hazard a guess at supply & demand, plus import duty, govt taxes and every other way the UK tax payer gets screwed over by whatever govt is in power. We don't have a low n slow bbq culture mostly, I'd hazard a guess due to our lack of a summer. The best most UK families have as a bbq is a few part cooked burgers and some blackened and raw sausages.
To misquote the bard...."We few, we happy few this band of bbqers"
You may as well ask why we have north sea oil and pay more for petrol & diesel than any other first world country?
