Pork shoulder
Morrisons have boneless pork shoulder for £1.97 a kg. Seems a good price. Picked up one to have a practice with.

Re: Pork shoulder
I always go for the more "triangular shaped" joints when going to the supermarket - more likely to be form the "good end" I was told

Re: Pork shoulder
I have had those and they are ok but not real lump of meat. I opened one up and it fell apart. It was just bits left inside. Guess you get what you pay for. Done slow as a roasting joint it would be fine though.

Hmm...maybe having a trip to the butcher then.

Re: Pork shoulder
Had one earlier in the week and it went dry in a way the butchers just doesn't and was flavourless. Really getting more and more depressed by the quality of supermarket meat.

Re: Pork shoulder
Sadly they cater to the mass market, it's sad to say that a large proportion of the British public has tasted slow reared "proper" pork. Or any real quality meat, they are happy to take what the supermarket offers

Re: Pork shoulder
I cooked another one tonight as I had 3 lumps. Was very little fat in the middle and it has dried some. Still, ok for sarnies. Did some pork belly from aldi a week or so ago and it was awesome. Also did spicy chicken and peppers. Best flavour ever and smoked with beech. Mmmmm.
Re: Pork shoulder
It was my New Years resolution.. not to buy meat at the supermarket. Its been a revelation! Majority of the population must have forgotten what chicken tastes like! and prices are not as bad as I feared; was fully prepared for the "less but better quality" move but has not been necessary

Re: Pork shoulder
Supermarket meat is pretty crap generally. I just never get time to go to my butcher. By the time I get back they are shut and I work till 12 on a sat so they are shut then too.
At least the supermarket is open till 8 or 9 if not later. I find jow that I'm quite picky with supermarket meat and look over it quite carefully.

Re: Pork shoulder
Yes there are many reasons not to go - that's why it was a resolution, something to work on
I've also got a chest freezer which makes it easier to buy enough items for fewer trips
