These are the other pellets I was using earlier in the year, with better success. I've had mesquite, cherry and apple from them.

My normal supplier was out of stock so googled and came up with Liverpool wood pellets well what fantastic service 27kg delivered for £27.00 and arrived next day the guy even said if they weren't up to scratch he would refund!!! now in my mind that's how it should be done can't believe he's British didn't know we had co like this in uk.more importantly the pellets were as good as any I've tried hope he continues to do them.makkk

I think that Lil Devils blend is not as potent as say cookshack Hickory, they're alder based with other hardwoods for flavour so you won't get as strong flavour as with the Cookshack ones or the British oak pellets.
I've tried them and I like them, no better or worse than the cookshack hickory, but a different flavour. There's also the Luisiana grills branded pellets available from Grakka, I think these may be manufactured by the guys who make lil devils from what I've been reading on the web.
I'm a little hesitant to buy the British oak pellets, a) because English oak on its own isn't the best flavour IMHO, you need a fruit wood to balance the smoke and b) because I'm a bit concerned about auger damage in the long term with the oak pellets. They're quite a bit harder than the cookshack pellets and I've known harder pellets to slowly damage Traeger augers and cause them to jam up on a regular basis.

I have so far used one of the 3 bags of Lil' Devils I bought. Am currently back on Louisiana Grills hickory, although I had their cherry loaded yesterday.
I switched back to LG pellets, because the first bag of Lil Devil left me questioning the amount of smoke taste I was getting with them. I haven't used my grill enough to be confident if that was due to the pellets or my method of cooking. Since going back to LG pellets, my food took on an immediate (and pleasant!) hit of smoke. I'm going to carry on for another week or so, then use another bag of Lil' Devils to compare.
If my opinion of Lil' Devils continues, it won't stop me buying them, as they are half the price of the LG pellets. I'll simply use LG pellets for slow smoking and Lil' Devils for high temperature grilling, where the smoke is less of an issue anyway.
I have used oak in my Traeger - supplied briefly by Jackie - and had no problems with it. Actually quite liked the taste.

Sounds to me like you quite like heavier smoke flavour than me if you go for straight oak. Sticking with what you like, your idea about using the lil devils for hot cooking may work well in terms of saving you some cash. That's more cash for meat

To be fair to the Lil' Devils, I didn't dislike what I got from them, it was just a lot milder than what I had cooked up previously. It may well be that as a newby, I've been overdoing the smoke, and have got used to it. Other than that, the only other thing I have for comparison was the BBQ I had in San Franscisco, which (with one exception) was fairly heavy smoked.
The real test is what other folk eating your food like. I have some folk coming round on Saturday, so I may put the Lil' Devils back in and see what they think.

I've heard the fishmerchants round here use oak for cold smoking their fish- haddock, cod and ling. I'm trying to get in contact with one at the mo to buy a bag.

Hello All...from the west coast of US. As the manufacturer of Lil Devils BBQ and Smoker Pellets, it's great to hear feedback from your part of the world. To set a few things straight: we've manufactured food grade bbq pellets since 1988, originally for Traeger before coming out with the LD brand. Some of you may have noticed the info on the back of the bag where it states we won an award from the US based Pellet Fuels Institute for our pioneering efforts in this category. We're not new to this and, in fact, the roots of our company are in the supplying of food grade sawdust to USDA inspected food processing plants which use the wood for smoking/curing - there are very high standards to pass this inspection. We source our raw materials with extreme scrutiny and our proprietary process utilizes no lubricants/additives such as vegetable or mineral oils. All of the wood we source comes into our plant in a green state (moisture laden) and we perform all of the drying at temperatures of up to 1000 degrees F. This ensures a sterilized product and allows for the next step of pelletization. Ordered some Lil' Devils this morning, hopefully get to try them out this weekend; just undecided what to cook.
