Smoking wood

Always on the look out for a bargain, I was searching for a local supplier for smoking woods. Found this guy, who sells small net bags of "specialist" woods for fires: http://thefirewoodman.co.uk/specialist-woods

He's based in Hook, Hampshire and only 20 mins from me. I've just come back from picking up bags of cherry, apple & oak. Will need a little splitting, but I thought that £6.99 or so a bag was a good price?

If the nets you get for £6.99 are the same size as those shown in the pictures on the site then these seem like great prices. Do you know the rough weight of a bag?

I'm guessing 8kg or so, don't have scales that go that high.

They're all 6"-9" long and need splitting, so just bought a log splitting wedgie thing this morning. I did talk to the owner about doing chunks in the future and it's on his list. He already does chips, but they're a bit pricey IMHO.

That does seem good value for money, do they deliver nationwide? I often work in Hampshire but not going for a few weeks.

I suspect delivery may kill the price though...

That seems like a good deal. It's worth checking with local tree surgeons too, I recently got about 30kg of cherry logs for £9

This might be a daft question but I'm going to ask anyway!
Can you use any kind of cherry wood? There must be umptine different types out there, cultivars and the like. For example is english oak any different to turkey oak? Or am I thinking about it too much?

I'd imagine there are subtle differences between 'em, but yeah I don't see why you couldn't use any variety. Hardwood's hardwood!

English Oak is from the White Oak family. Where in the US they also have Red Oak. It is pretty much the same for Cherry & Cherry Blossom.

The logs are a good price from the chap in hook, but the price will probably increase, as it takes a lot of time to cut logs into chunks, either he will have to pay someone to cut all the logs up into chunks, or do it himself. Our chunks are £14.99 for a 5 Kg sack.

All types of Cherry woods are good to use, but don't use Turkey Oak!
Turkey Oak is an evergreen wood and full of a creosote type sap, NASTY!!!
