Dark molasses

Hi,

I've been given a couple of recipes that i'd like to try which require dark molasses but i cannot find this anywhere.

Does anyone know of anyone in the UK that sells this?

I believe the UK equivalent is Black Treacle, which you should be able to get in the bakery aisle of most supermarkets.

I'd seen some other bits on the internet calling it something else but looking at it a bit more it looks like treacle is what i'm after.

Chris is right, black treacle is a good substitute ... but if you really want dark molasses then try the 'speciality foods' section of either Tesco or Sainsburys, I have bought it there before ... it is slightly less sweet than treacle.

Quick one Jackie... we used to buy Mollasses in 5 litre tubs from the equestrian centre.

Whilst yes I know this is a horsey thing, what is the difference between that molasses and the molasses that is used in cooking?

As I understand it, some brands of black treacle are a mixture of dark molasses and invert syrup. I believe that Lyle's Original Black Treacle is the real deal.

Billingtons dark molasses sugar is available in Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Morrisons at least. I've bought it from all of the above. It's with the rest of the sugar, you can get a great selection of sugars these days in supermarkets

Thats the one I've been using aswell Steve, but fancied giving a liquid one a try.
