smoke from charcoal

Feel free to ask any questions, one of the experts will certainly respond, don't be afraid to ask anything, we were all beginners at some point.

smoke from charcoal

Post by stephenjedward »

not new to BBQ but this season I am getting a ton of acrid smoke from my chinmey starter (yesterday had the neighbours round accusing me of having a bonfire....) I mean pure white/dark grey cant see you hand in front of your face smoke

Its a Big K bag of briquettes.

I maybe thought the bag had got damp or there is alot of dust on the briquettes.

any advise or ???

Just a thought, did they light easily? I'm thinking maybe a mix-up in Big K packaging dept and they are a mix of self-lighting and proper charcoal?

I email BigK and they said

"It seems that the reason for the heavy smoke was that the briquettes somehow came into contact with damp whilst in the distribution chain, which unfortunately is beyond our control"

maybe the bags had been left on a pallet in the rain at some point?? (Wickes)

they have offered to send me some free samples :D

Bravo.

They seem to have a delivery service if you purchase online - might be worthwhile if you buy regular quantities of charcoal - and perhaps even indulge in fresh (and dry) restaurant grade charcoal.

Perhaps Big K might like to become an IBQN sponsor :-) If they showed up at an event selling coal, i'm sure people would stock up if it was quality stuff.

Big K are one of my sponsors. I've passed around some bulk purchase pricing that i've arranged with them in the past.

The minimum order is 10 bags of their resturant grade charcoal with discounts for the more people buy, please let me know if anyone would like more info'.
