It is only desinged for cold smoking remember not "proper" hot smoking. I have seen plans for cold smokers using cardboard boxes & oven racks.

But surely those would be food grade plastics and cardboard used?
I know you just need to be a bit careful, not sure though as food not in direct contact?

That would make sense, but the ones I've seen the food doesn't touch the box or bin, it rests on racks or is hung from hooks.
