The best bit...

To get it crated, transported from Missouri by road to New York, onto a ship and across the Atlantic Ocean to Thamesport in Kent apx £400. Very reasonable if you ask me :D

The cost in fees (not including vat and import duty) to do the admin and move to an ERTS warehouse across the road from the port, all of 1/2 a mile, £250.

You got to love Britain eh

That £250 doesn't include the vat and import duty.

That was literally the cost to move it through the bloody port.

Quite correct - and now you know part of the reason why we live in rip-off britain. Unless you bring it in your suitcase, there are loads of fees and charges to contend with importing ANYTHING.

Duties (usually low single digit percent) , 20 % vat (on the landed cost - so item + shipping), then all the fees associated with customs clerance, port charges, etc etc etc... it all adds up - particularly if you only bring in one small item. If you bring in a container load of one item - costs per item come down a massive amount as the handling costs are pretty much fixed.

Lord help you if customs decide to inspect the container it comes in. They do it in their own time, and the container handling company charges you 'rent' for the privilege.

I was aware of duty, import VAT etc., having brought stuff in myself it was the handling fees that shocked me. Mind you, if they carried in like the old sedan chairs were then maybe that would go part way.
