Hi BRUN
There are two types of Drum , Tighthead( ie fixed) and loosehead(removable).
With the loosehead drums you can only fit in one grate for large items like Brisket etc, or two grates placed closer together for smaller items as you need a good distance from the fire basket to the food.
When using a BBQ lid you get extra room to cook, so you can fit two grates and cook larger items on both of them. I can cook six shoulders on my drum and have cooked a whole Goose on the top rack.
Follow Stretchies guide you can't go wrong with it.
Hope this helps

Sorry matey, I thought you meant how to remove the lid in the first place :D

In that case I think either:

A: Remove the lid like I did but do the grind on the bottom of the lip that way you'll still have a lip that will support the weight of the lid and screw a handle on to the top of the lid as below

B: Get a cheapo 57cm BBQ for parts, use the coal grill as the base for your charcoal basket, use the food grill as a food grill and using your favourite precision instrument you hammer the lip of the lid flat so it sits on your drum ;)

You can probably get a complete 57cm kettle BBQ for £30 if you search around, compare that to £30 just for a weber 57cm food grill and it's money well spent

Cheers, downloaded your guide

ill have to decide what we want to do about the lid, dont think we will need extra height tbh and trying to keep it as cheap as possible

I was too but to be honest once I got going I was SOOO glad I went with the extra room.
You might not think you'll be cooking that much meat but it soon gets taken up with just a couple of bits of meat, even with two racks on my drum I wish I had more room
