Pro q cold smoking

Postby awesselbaum » 18 Oct 2013, 07:02

I've got one of the pro q cold smokers.
Does it only use saw dust or can you put some of the Cameron wood chips in it?
I used some alder wood dust from classens (very cheap). It smoldered very quickly and actually ran hot, probably only lasted 2hrs which is disappointing. I think this may be because I left the tea light burning.

Hi Ant.

Saw dust only, no chips. I would suggest getting a source of food grade dust. You should have removed the tealight as soon as the dust was lit. Never mind, good learning curve.

I can get 12 -14 hrs depending on the type of dust used.
Keep trying, the missus has just finished an 8 hr smoke of Tangerines. Have an Oak smoked Whisky marmalade ready for Xmas !

Derek.

Edited to add:

This is where I source my wood dust, never had a problem with it, but you can find it cheaper, especially if you buy in bulk.

Hi
I will be putting up a post soon about how you can make your own sawdust from woodchip with two simple items and save a fortune.

The advantage of using certified sawdust is you can guarantee it is free from petrochemicals (deposited by chain saws and timber manufacturing) and is actually the wood you wanted. I've spoken to Si about his idea and it sounds great if you've a source of woodchips/shavings etc that are clean and suitable and I know many of you have 8-) . Doubtless I'll be taking photographs of it when we visit Si shortly so will be able to illustrate his description :D

As to the tea-light, congratulations for getting it started with the tea light in the first place. I can't see how keeping the tea light in has any real bearing on the length of time the dust/chips took to burn. Yes it is still heating the mesh up but after an hour or so surely the smouldering ash-front would be at a higher temperature than the mesh the further from the flame it gets?
