Chimneas

Looking at the chimneas because the mrs gets cold outside. Was wondering what the pros and cons were with some of the options. Ultimately I'd like to take the hot coals from the barbecue when I've finished and shove them in a chimnea with some wood and feel warm without getting smoked out. Which is what happens with wood on the barbecue or the MIL's fire pit.

Does the height of the stack make a difference? (Mainly smoke worries)
Does the material matter much (Bronze/Clay/Iron &/Or Steel)
Are they safe to throw hot coals in?

I'd love to make a wood burner from an old gas bottle, I had the chance to get a couple of 47kg ones but I left it too long and they've gone now
