Hey Philip,

I have a Daniel Boone, which is the smaller version of the JB, and I cannot recommend them enough. Best thing I have ever bought.

They are a dream to use and offer really consistent cooking. No more phaffing about with charcoal and vents. Just great results every time.

Cooking costs work out at about 50-60p per hour using GMG pellets.

The other advantage of course is you can buy one from americanbbq and be cooking on it next weekend

I've been waiting till after i head over to the Jack before i promote that, as i'll be able to have a good look around one. From what i've seen already they're good cookers, teams are winning on them and they've got enough size for catering with over here.

Also the waiting time is a fraction of the time it takes to get a Backwoods built.

What's the advantages over say a GMG Jim Bowie?

Size, better cooking in cold weather, no electrics to break or expensive parts to replace.

Great news not sure if going though you would save me load of time and emails, was emailed asking for if I had a Broker? no clue why but ill look into it. But should have a shipping price next week I hope.

The lead time was a big pull for me over the backwoods as Ill like my cooker by the end of the year and don't think that will happen with Backwoods.

Thanks Toby,any news on your cooker I seen on facebook yet? looks good.

Just waiting for final pricing with stainless inner and grills. Most cabinet smokers have mild steel inside but i think a stainless option is better for local councils and to keep clean............ It cooks like a dream so it is just the final look, latches wheels etc. It can also be any colour you want as the powder coating holds its own.

FInal price should be around £2,400 inc VAT, I will also be throwing in a PItMasterIQ with each one.

Toby they do look good, What cooking space will they hold? Weight of the units? will they be other sizes etc? and the most important part a name yet?

I kinda committed to a battle box but if things go well next year I was planning on a larger cooker.

We don't really get cold weather down here in Plymouth Ed, and GMG does a made-to-fit thermal blanket thingy for those that do.

I've only had my Danny Boy for about a year, so can't comment on long term reliability, but it's been faultless up to now. Customer service at americanbbq is really excellent as well. They really do go the extra mile.

I can only say how happy I've been with mine, but at the end of the day when you're spending £1000+ they all better be good right?

No the Battle box is much larger..but to give you a rough idea the Jim bowies primary capacity is about
658 square inches...

I could not find in square inches how much the battle box can hold,so I looked up the backwoods chubby which is a lot smaller than the Humpherys and primary capacity on the chubby is 1,023 square inches.


The GMs are great cookers for sure, but as ill be cooking at a weekly venue soon,and as Ed said I could do without having to worry about electrics not working etc.

If I was going for a pellet smoker mind you I do love the look of the REC TEC Grills.

Your not wrong there, i assumed that the battle box was meant to be the same size if not bigger than the Fatboy. It turns out that it's more G2 Chubby sized. Looking at what they're saying about the grill size i'd think you'd be able to fit 6 bone in pork neck end's in it at a time or 3 packer briskets at a time where the racks are quite narrow in comparison to the Fatboy. If you use boned shoulders you'll fit more in it though.
