Anyone fitted a rubber seal to their smoker?

Just got my GMG Daniel Boone grill and love it to bits, but I wonder why smokers/grills don't have a rubber seal fitted as standard on the door like you have with a regular oven, as it would really help with maintaining heat temp and keeping in the smoke.

The lid fits great on the GMG DB, but there's still a few little gaps which would be totally plugged up using a rubber seal.

Has anyone fitted one to their grill/smoker?

They're only £5 on Amazon, so I'll try it out and report back.

I don't think rubber would be good to use, since it could melt at higher temps. Some people use stove gasket adhesive. Make sure both surfaces are CLEAN. Put grease on the lid to keep the adhesive from sticking, lay a bead of the adhesive on the body of the smoker, put the lid down and weight it or tie it down to form the adhesive to the gap.

One thing I did with one of my offsets was to beat the lid with a rubber mallet. That made a huge difference.

They're designed for ovens, so I don't think heat will be an issue.

If they are designed for ovens, I doubt they would be rubber.

You are right, they are saying it is rubber. Do you know how you will attach it? I think I would be more likely to just use the sealant / gasket maker, which they show as something bought along with the rubber gasket:

I've seen people use it on smokers before and I can cut it down into smaller pieces hopefully, as my GMG only leaks slightly around the bend in the lid.

Bought some BBQ paint and some high temp silicone as following a few catering jobs its in need of some tlc.

In an ideal world, the perfect product would simply be pushed onto the edge of the lid opening.

But I suspect I will have to do a bodge job as normal

Fire rope. That takes me back to my old wood burner. I'd forgotten about that stuff.

One word of warning Nick. I did a similar thing to my offset smoker using heat proof sealant around the edge of the lid and it worked, but as the grill is not designed for it, when the lid is closed it rests on the top section of the seal and makes the bottom of the lid poke out. I fixed this by attaching a couple of bungies from the lid handle to the bottom of the smoker causing it to clamp shut tight, but the sealant is very spongy and happy to give way. Not sure the fire rope will do the same thing. Just something to be aware of before doing anything permanent with glue

Let me know how you get on and I'll report back with my rubber seal experiment.

Fire rope arrived today its very soft so shouldn't stick up too much when the lid is closed. Looks like it will do pretty well as I can cut it into couple cm lengths as I need it.

Will post how it goes when I get chance to sort it.
