Soaking wood chips a myth?

Have we all been doing it wrong? This article suggests there is no need to soak wood chips - kind of makes
sense!

It's an interesting experiment, I always thought soaking was to slow down combustion rather then prevent it, which it seems to do in chips. It would be interesting to hear from the more experienced members. :D
On a similar vein Steven Raichlen stated he has tried both soaked and dry wood skewers and found little or no difference in their combustion times.
