All about me!

Postby Riverrat » 26 Aug 2011, 20:03

Hi and hello to all at BBBQ, me, I'm a Brit currently living in Northern Florida. I used to have a deep rooted fear of the British summer BBQ - flash burnt sausages, burgers seasoned with lighter fluid and chicken cooked in a manner that even a vet could restore to life ..................nightmare!!!! Four years in the deep South and I am a changed man, I have fallen foul of the darker side, my life is in ruins. Yes, I confess, I am an addict. My down fall started with the gift of a Brinkman ECB and a Turkey, things have just gone down hill from there. Rubs, marinades, injections, smoke - I will try anything just to get my fix, Beef, Pork, Chicken, Shrimp and veggies, will try anything, well almost anything, have avoided some of the more dubious Southern delights - Squirrel, Frogs and Raccoon ( just google grilled raccoon or smoked raccoon).

Currently using a Weber 22 OTS which I have found a good all rounder, (the ECB rotted out after 18 months) have found it to be a good grill and at a pinch can slow cook/smoke in a goody manner - just not much capacity compared to the ECB, but will do to get by on until I can bite the bullet on a WSM.

Glad to see that things are looking up a little on the grilling front in the UK, I might be back in the UK soon and I will need my fix.

Gotta git for now, putting a Chicken on the grill for dinner ( and no vet will revive this one!!!)

Welcome Riverrat. I too had to venture to the USA to discover the true meaning of BBQ. I can fully appreciate the culture shock that you went through during your "enlightenment" - and when you come back to the UK you can help us to evangelise - just not too much singing and clapping please!
Dont write off the raccoon though till you have tasted it - it is great if done well. If your friends are anything like mine you will have already tasted it and they just wont have told you!

Welcome, if I can offer you one piece of advice then it's go buy yourself a WSM, I did and you won't regret it, if you want to save a few £'s then you could have a look at a ProQ Excel 20

Eddie

Doubt I can come up with any new and exciting recipes that you guys have not already heard about or tried, I am still a novice who is pleased when a butt is only charred half way through ( where do you find the smoke ring???)

JEC

I hear you buddy, WSM is the way for me to go. The ECB I have has been a lot of fun in it's short life but replacing it every couple of years is not much of an option, also no method of heat control!!! Now just got to decide which size to get.

Try this sometime, drop half an onion onto the hot coals when you are smoking or grilling - don't know if it flavors the meat at all but it sure smells good!!!!! Might have to try some Onion smoked beef sometime.
