Okay, I have been asked to recommend an inexpensive kettle BBQ by some friends of ours. Knowing their circumstances their budget is about £80 TOPS and that's stretching them at the moment. They want a charcoal kettle bbq not a gas one, they have a hankering to get into bbq'ing having watched lots of youtube & current TV and want the versatility a kettle provides. Bearing in mind I'll probably be eating of this in the near future can anyone suggest a make/model or supplier which fits the bill.
They are well aware that the quality won't be top notch but with care a reasonable bbq should last them a while.

Ebay for a secondhand weber kettle? Seen a fair few go for under their budget...

I did suggest that but they would rather start from new, even with a lesser quality make

You can pick up a new 57cm Weber Compact Kettle for 75-85 quid, including shipping. Amazon has the smaller 47cm Weber Compact Kettle for 69 quid.

Note that the Compact has a much shallower lid, so if your friends ever wanted to do large pieces of meat, or beer-can chicken, they would have problems. However, if all they are looking at are steaks, chicken parts, burgers and bangers, they will be fine.

Build quality is the same as the more expensive Kettle.

there are fantastic OT platinums on ebay with rotisseries, covers, etc. I'm almost tempted to buy another myself. I don't know why people are so reluctant to buy them, after a couple of cooks they all look the same anyway.

That's true, they could even buy a 2nd hand weber and a brand new grill grate to go with it, that would be my suggestion. I've seen plenty of used webers that have only been used once or twice but in great nick, together with a brand new grate and your in business.
