Which smoker box?

Hi guys

I'm new to smoking and would like to know if there's any difference in the choice of smoker box or whether there's a 'daddy' out there. I'm using an electric DIY pot smoker and so far have just bunged the chips in a pan which has worked pretty good but I'd like to know if using a box will increase the smoke time.

Cheers!

Jay

The smoke generator I use is the AMNPS Pellet Smoker from Amazen Products in the USA. http://www.amazenproducts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=AMNPS5X8 Shipping to the UK is quick and simple and it gives 12 hours + smoke time. You can use it in almost anything for cold smoking. They also do tube smokers for use in hot smokers. I have has several smoke generators - including the ProQ and this knocks spots off them all.

I assume you're hot smoking. Switching to chunks isnthe best thing but they aren't always available. I've heard of a small cast iron pot with a couple of holes drilled in the lid.

To increase the smoke time you have to string things out literally. That's why the amazen smoke box is the daddy it's designed like a maze so that the smouldering pellets snake along at there own pace increasing smoke time. The tube smoker does the same thing for hot smoking as wade suggests. If you don't fancy getting a tube from the U.S. Napoleon do a one for under 15 quid but I've never tried it

Chunks are useful for long smokes, but I do also use a pot especially if I want chunks of say cherry to keep going but a quicker burn time for something like hickory or mesquite so as not to overpower.
The pot I use is this small cast iron one http://www.planetbarbecue.co.uk/Cast%20 ... %20Pot.htm

For chunks, I use http://www.smokewoodshack.com/ but many people also use Paul Goulden http://bbqsmokingwood.co.uk/

Try any local tree surgeons before you order anything online. You'll probably find you can get a very cheap deal on hardwood. Although you may need an axe ;)
