I need to buy some more fuel as i'm down to my last bag of restaurant lump wood from bar-be-quick which has been good for grilling. I am now moving into smoking as well as grilling on my weber one touch.
Is there any noticable difference in quality between the bar-be-quick and BigK (ach-15) restaurant grade lump wood? If not i'll probably just stick with the bar-be-quick as they work out cheaper when only buying a few bags...
I have considered briquettes but not convinced really, plus they cost a lot more for the better quality ones.

I find std grade charcoal better than restaurant for smoking as I find fewer temp spikes. I think that is down to the bigger chunks in restaurant grade catching, burning through and then onto the next. Std grade is smaller pieces so holds a more stable temp.
I find good quality briquettes the easiest to control over long periods for smoking. They are more expensive, but burn times far exceed lumpwood charcoal in my experience.

Ok maybe I should reconsider and order some heat beads or weber long lsating then?
Every post I read seems to contradict the last. In one post i'll read that restaurant lump is the best, then i'll read in another that normal lump is best then in another that briquettes are better. Really confusing...Ideally I want it to work out the cheapest and least fuss...

Try a few things and work out what's best for you. I find briquettes least fuss. A full basket lit minion method in my WSM 47 will last a 12 hour cook at stable temps without adding fuel.

Weber premium. Want to try heat beads though. Just lit fire now as waking at 4.30am to put on a brisket. I know that temp will be stable in 4 hrs and give me an 8 hr cook. The alternative was getting up at 3.30am to light fire which if using lumpwood I would have done.
