I can easily get an empty oil barrel from work, does anyone know of any guides online to building a smoker from one, where i would get a lid and which grills fit etc

any info would be helpful no matter how small

The one I based my build on is unfortunately no longer available online but a quick search for "UDS build" should help.

There are different options for lids etc... you could use a lid from a kettle bbq or the lid from the drum.

not sure about low cost grates at this time of the year as homebase are probably not stocking them in the winter, but I am sure someone on the forum will know where to them ;)

good luck and keep us posted.

Hope linking to other forums is allowed, this is pretty much the ultimate UDS (Ugly Drum Smoker) thread

If you look at the events on the front page Toby is running a Drum & Baste course next year, how to build, set-up and use a UDS for home & competition.

Most of the barrels I'm seeing have removable lids, mine will be an oil barrel and the lid isn't so easily removable, anyone any tips on what to do with the lid, as with it previously having oil in it, its gonna need a few good burns before we think about cooking in it

Yep, have a look at my guide I mentioned above, lid removed with no sharp edges
