Hi

Don't know if its just my Tesco around here but they do bone in pork shoulder 2-3kg for around £8
I started with the Costco boneless shoulders and they was ok, the 4 pack of ribs are ok aswell for starting on.

I got done at a farm butchers £30 for a 4-5kg shoulder, learnt my lesson there and looked out for prices. it was butchered that day and was a lovely lump of meat but worth £30.......no!!

hope that helps a bit

I know the feeling mate. My 10-11lb shoulder was about £15 at a random butchers last weekend.

I used to live down your way, the big tesco at Hatfield and baldock are good and not forgetting the mothership size tesco in cheshunt!

I'm going to see what costco do tomorrow and will try my local asda as well. All early days for me so it's going to be a lot of trial and error. Now facing the charcoal dilemma, again will see if I can get restaurant grade lump wood at Costco and give it a bash :)

Never seen it said not to use minion with lumpwood, it's the way I've always worked it and it seems to go just fine. I'd recommend lump over briquettes any day - burns hotter and much cleaner, in my experience (no nasty smoke or smell) Although heatbeads do get rave reviews just about everywhere, but damn those things are expensive

Nothing wrong with lumpwood, or using the minion method with it.
Try Bookers if there is one near you, they sell blue bag lumpwood and boxes of boneless collar joints for around £2.70 odd per KG.
I personally have had no trouble with either of these products.

Cheers guys. I used briquettes on the weekend, think it was sainsburys own brand i had left from the summer. The initial smoke for the first hour was insane and blowing over all the gardens. Lucky no neighbours complained lol.

I've got a Booker near me but no way of signing up as I'm not a business etc

Manaed to get a costco card through an in-law as they work for the nhs so added me as a 2nd person.

Hi

Costco don't really stock charcoal, well my one hasn't had any in the last few times ive been and when they did I wasn't sure if its any good for low and slow.

Im not in any catering trade, im a self employed tiler and I got a booker membership, think they might be struggling for customers, my local one is always nearly empty!!!!
Worth a try and the lumpwood there isn't bad.

Cheers Slatts.

Just got back from costco and they didn't have any coal. Ended up getting some lumpwood from the bp garage near my street. Only worry is that it will be crap quality and as they store them in those outside locker things could have endured a bit of dampness. Got the bag sitting next to a radiator now, struggling to find good quality lump in time for the weekend.

There was a seller on ebay offering free next day delivery on big k restaurant grade, think it was 24kg for £40  I guess that's about 4 cooks out of that amount?

Going to see if the in law can get me a booker card, failing that are you allowed to add members? I could paypal you the cost of a card or a little sweetener in return for helping me out :D

I've seen these guys recommended on here before but I've not tried them. Thinking of getting some of the restaurant grade lump wood charcoal.

I'm not too far away (they're in Burnley) so will try and pick some up direct from them at some point. They do deliver but I'm not sure on the charges.

The only charcoal i've seen at Costco is the Bar-B-Quick type where you light the bag.

If you are near North London, I know the turkish shops on Green Lanes sell big bags of Big-K all year round. If you have an Eastern European supermarket near you - ask them.

I've got some Fuel Express lump from my local petrol garage, but also ordered some heat beads from Toby today hoping they come in time for the weekend. At least I have a plan B to go to if they don't come in time :)

To be honest it looks I just got into smoking at the completely wrong time of year
