A BBQ’ers Guide To Rudgwick

August Bank Holiday weekend (28th/29th/30th) is going to be a big weekend for BBQ in 2010. The British Barbecue Society’s Premier event of the year will be held at Rudgwick Steam & Country Show. This is going to be a big one, not only are we holding our Pit Masters National Final, but we’ve got the first Ready Steady Q competition happening on the Saturday and the first ever junior grilling championships on the Monday.Rudgwick Steam & Country Show is one of the South East’s major summer attraction and this year’s event will be the 24th show. It’s a family run event and one of the last remaining events of it’s kind, with hundreds of exhibitors and attractions spread out over a huge site it’s great fun for all the family.

“The 24th Rudgwick Steam & Country Show will once again bring together a wonderful array of the great British past and present with stunning exhibits, animals and displays of all kinds from all over the country. With the sights and  sounds of the beautifully restored vehicles and exhibits of the past  pondering around the site. Learn and see how things were done in the past with our numerous demonstrations and displays over this spectacular 44 acre site. See and stroke the heavy horses and take a look at our large pet and farm animal sections,  ride the traditional fun fair or ride in a military tank. Visit our 6,000 square feet quality craft marquee with homemade cakes and fudge and lots more. Sit down and take a break and enjoy live agricultural music from the New Forest Plonkers in our 140ft beer marquee with ploughman’s lunch and tea tent. Enjoy the always amusing animal parades from chickens to shires. Learn how to steam the magnificent and mighty engines. See the chain saw sculptures at work, All the vintage vehicles, acres of market stalls,  steam thrashing and tree trunk sawing, plus an action packed arena events programme. A  truly magical fun packed family day, with something for all ages to enjoy.”

Well we can quite confidently say you’re not going to be disappointed, with three competitions running and the chance to socialise with some of the UK’s finest Pit Masters it’s going to be a great weekend. The British BBQ Society agenda for the weekend is as follows:


Ready Steady Q Sponsored By Weber

10.00 – Ready Steady Q Begins

We will begin proceedings with “Ready Steady Q” a mystery box competition in which competitors have 1 hour per round to fire up their grill and create a masterpiece for judging, with £1,000 up for grabs for the winner it has to be worth a go!!

There will be 3 Ready Steady Q qualifying rounds timed as follows:

  • 10:00         Round 1
  • 11.30          Round 2
  • 13:00         Round 3
  • 14:30         Final Round

14.00 – The Pit Masters National Final Begins

The British BBQ Society Pit Masters competition has 4 compulsory categories, Pork, Brisket, Ribs & Chicken with additional categories in Dessert and BBQ Sauce. The food is all slow cooked in the traditional American style.  Competitors will be given their meat at 2pm, which allows plenty of time for preparation prior to cooking for up to 14 hours over night. Judging for Pit Masters takes place at 30min intervals on Sunday from 11am.

*Note: There will be no vehicular access to the show ground between 9am and 6pm each day. Pit Masters teams must be on site before 9am Saturday or they will not be able to set up until 6pm.

14.30 – Ready Steady Q Final Begins

The top scoring contenstants from the qualifying rounds will have one hour to battle it out for that £1000 prize. A fresh box of mystery ingredients means they’ll have to get creative all over again if they want to walk away with the cash.

16.00 – Ready Steady Q Awards Ceremony

The Ready Steady Q awards ceremony will take place at 16.00.


11.30 – Pit Masters National Final Judging Begins

After cooking all night, our teams start turning in their entries on Sunday morning. Submissio ntimes are as follows:

  • 11:30 BBQ Sauce
  • 12:00 Chicken
  • 12:30 Pork Ribs
  • 13:00 Pork
  • 13:30 Brisket
  • 14:00 Dessert

16:00 – Pit Masters Prize Giving (May be bought forward)

The final results of Pit Masters will be announced, someone will be going to the Jack Daniel’s World Invitational BBQ Championships!!!


10.00 – Kids Q Competition

Not forgetting the Kids, on Monday 30th August we will be launching “Kids Q”, Children between 7 – 12 years old get to compete at the first ever Junior BBQ event, the aim, to create a burger from scratch and cook it to perfection! A great range of prizes are up for grabs. Please note 1 parent is expected to help the child fire up the BBQ and make sure that their child is acting in a safe manner.

13.00 – Ready Steady Q Juniors

Ready Steady Q Juniors will take place at 1pm for those aged between 12 – 16, the aim to season and cook the best steak cooked to medium and presented to the judges for blind tasting, first prize £100.

All in all, this is going to be a great weekend of BBQ fun with loads going on even before you consider all the great attractions throughout the rest of the show. We really hope to see you there!
