Hi guys,

Ma first post, on a mission to build me a Ugly Drum Smoker.
Been studyin' hard but can't seem to find an answer.

(sorry for silly accent, I can't seem to help mimicking our overseas compadres)....

I have just picked up a new steel drum for my UDS. It has a thick red (burgandy, dark) paint. Is this lining, or just paint?

I kinda guessed it would be obvious if it wasn't lined.

I was told it was used for fruit juice which was stored in a removable bag. I can scratch the interior with my keys..

Stupid question? perhaps...... Glad to be here. Looking forward to smoking my first UDS butt!

The answer is out there.
But so much differing advice.
Check posts on here: Re the dreaded liner, check out posts from US sites. You make the call.
I cook at, Top 325f, that temp should not trouble the lining.
Your call to make.

Do you leave the lining in then Simon?

Most folks use a disk sander to remove the liner...some build a huge fire to burn it out...either way it needs to go.

All the drums I have used have been unlined, and I can get brand new unlined drums locally.
I know there is a post on here somewhere about drum liner.

Indeed - as you say, there is alot of conflicting information. I'm in two minds about it really. On the one hand, the liner should pose no problems at the temperature we're dealing with, on the other hand, you really do need to do a burn-out anyhow to get rid of the exterior paint and replace with heat-proof paint.

I burn out all my drums, new or used as a matter of course.

Ps; I don't use HT paint, just radiator enamel, it does the job just fine.
