wood chunks and timber yards

hey. how receptive are timber yards to the request of a bag of oak etc offcuts, anybody got any experience of doing this? there used to be a load of small timber yards in coventry, but as with everything else the small ones have died.

I havnt tried wood yards before but I got a massive sack of oak off cuts (untreated) from a local carpenter/cabinate builder i only asked 3 in the area and 2 of them were more than happy to swap a bag for a bottle of wine. might be worth you phoning a few in your area .

He most certainly is - took a drive out on Sunday morning and picked up a bag each of oak, cherry and apple.

There was definitely more satisfaction in smoking with BIG CHUNKS OF WOOD rather than piffling about with soggy woodchips or tin foil, as I've always done before.
