I found a recon unit on ebay and bought that, no backlight but it's awesome.
I have it with me when I do BBQ's for the pub (burgers, sausages and chicken breasts), they take the mickey out of me but no one can argue about the food not being cooked

My girlfriend thought it was overkill that I was keeping such a close eye on temps when cooking, but she can't live without it now either. It's the kitchen gadget you didn't know you needed until you got one

FYI - I had queried with the sales team at Thermopen (ETI) if the £36 SuperFast Thermopens on Amazon were authentic as they are much cheaper than their website (£57.60). I was advised that the ETI seller on Amazon sells seconds (slight blemishes on casing) and this is the reason why they are cheaper. Everything is in perfect working order.
The red one seems to be the favourite and most expensive

Meat isn't cooked in a specific time of cooking at a specific temperature - it is cooked when the internal temperature read right
Definitely worth getting a therapen - as Dave says its useful a lot more of the time than just BBQ, and when smoking thighs at the pub it is worth being certain of the cook, people are not used to slightly pink, very juicy chicken!

Mine was a factory seconds/refurb and there wasn't a mark on it. I've no idea why it was sold as such and I've heard the same thing from other people who've bought them

A backlit one is on my christmas list, shame they don't do factory seconds of that version otherwise i'd have bought one a long time ago.

Mine is spot on despite being a second. Even the packaging was perfect.
Bought the MIL one for Crimbo indeed

I thought that I would join this thread and try to clarify the Thermapen situation.
The units sold on Ebay are seconds. There will be a small, if not obvious blemish in the case. We have very high standards to maintain here at ETI.
The cheaper units sold on Amazon are those cased in a soon to be discontinued colour, such as purple or dark green
The other units are sold at the same price that they are on our main websites

Thanks for the clarification Alan.
