Try to avoid cheap. All good points about it working for small cooks. However my recent experience with it has been such poor quality that I waste so much falling through the grates I lose any savings in cost. It also sounds like you are doing decent cooks. I never got paper to work for me and use one block of eco fire lighter.

I use lump wood charcoal 3 to 4 times a week all year round. To light , I use B&Q natural firelighters - come in packs of 48 for about £2.50 I think.
I use two of these firelighters to light the lump - works each and every time. I spread the charcoal into the shape I want and then create a little dome around the lighters in the centre of the lump, light and forget for half an hour.
Hope that helps.
Simon

NomNom I haven't checked recently but last year I picked up a couple of bags at £2.95 for 5Kg, I've noticed they have red coloured bags this year but wasn't looking at the price. Next time I'm in I'll check.

Thanks Keith. Blimey, that is cheap - 59p a kilo. Was that lump?

No briquettes, don't know what the new red bags are though.

Try wetting your newspaper with cooking oil? Burns a bit hotter and a bit longer.
