I'd read that 'uncrimping' part of the crimp will allow it to fit through, but then confused as to why everyone only talks about the curved one - would have thought the rear of both probes were the same.

Happy for the probes to live in situ if uncrimp works to get the through.

Already being such a girl about drilling a hole, and not sure i can live with the look of it missing a shelf bolt.

Hi Matt,

I've just had a look and the pit probe has got the same problem as the meat probe and i don't think you would be able to crimp it enough to go through the hole.

Although looking at your earlier post you're saying that you're looking to start using an IQ. Part of the reason that i stopped using my mavericks was to do with the fact that they don't seem to work very well with forced draft systems. I had a panic at a comp' a couple of years ago when using a maverick along with my Stoker and the Maverick was saying the pit temp' was all over the place and when the stoker was set at 225f the maverick was running at 340f, i only realised what the problem was as i put my hand on the smoker and it was like it was running at 225f. I think it's something to do with the circulation of the air or something like that but, you just have to learn to trust the IQ.

Interesting on the maverick, I was hoping to use it as my insurance policy & a final check for not running low on fuel, IQ failure etc.

Might have to return to the drawing board on this then!

Hi Matt, the issue of range, 300ft. according to the read up - is yours farther? I read somewhere brick walls and other solid masses obstruct the rays of the probe. Would tin foil attached to the areial or something similar help? Worked for me with radio 1 many, many years ago, just a thought starter.

Hmmm an interesting thought.

I'd read about the antenna mod, but realistically would end up with a paperweight!

Strangely, 2 years ago, when the 73 was new it worked perfectly in my lounge but with nothing having changed it seems to lose signal often - and keeps displaying the last temperature received (designer of that system should be shot!)

Have changed batteries to fresh, but no joy & have limited trust with it now. Will try foil & see if I get an improvement.

I'll probably stick with it & see if I have the same temp issues Ed raised. If not, will upgrade to the 73 & keep the 73 for when I need to use the OTG at the same time.

As a newcomer I thought i would make it easier on myself by getting a proQ excel - ready fitted grommets for my new maveric - but the probes wouldn't fit at all until a drill had been used to clear the grommets, the curved probe won't go through (because its curved!!!) and the straight one only goes in as far as the crimp. Don't know about 300 feet transmit distance, it seemed to alert if I walked into a different room in the house.
(don't do as I did, bought a maveric from Utah, had to pay import duties and postage charges, cost about £85)

Ouch!

I bought my first 73 from Macsbbq, which at the time was the only place I could find without importing it.

I've ordered some CJ grommets big enough for the probes, as got a friend out there next week & saves on postage.

Will see if I pluck up the courage to drill

Righty ho, I have my 3/8 grommets from cajunbandit.

Decision time now....

1) keep using the hole where I removed a screw & sell the grommets

2) drill a new hole in my wsm

3) drill existing strap & hole larger, to fit the grommet through.

Option 1 or 3 are my thought so far, but keen to canvas opinion

I'd take it to a professional and drill a nice new hole. Have a garage close to where I live who I use for random favours.

+1 for PeanutZA - that way you can put it in the best position for you, and where it's needed.
