Picked up a pair of brand new barrels yesterday :)

Almost seems a shame to burn them out to get the paint off the outside, but needs must!

Here's one with the lid I've sourced

Picking up a beer keg tomorrow to create two firebaskets ala CyderPig's method :)

I'm still wondering how me'lady is letting me get away with this self indulgence...must be the meaty prospects I say :)

Source of barrels and cost? Or have I missed that in a previous post?

£20 per barrel inc lids and clips, from a recycling place in the west midlands - I'm hoping that's a decent price! :?

Hoping someone can help - I'm getting overwhelmed with info from the web and thousands of UDS posts.

1. I've bought some brass 3/4" hex nipples + end caps, do you reckon would it be OK to use brass? As I've read that this can also release Zinc Oxide when heated...

2. The drum's I've sourced are brand new and unlined. Do you think I still need to have a burn out to get the existing paint off? ie. will it discolour when used under normal smoking conditions, or could I just paint over this?

Cheers in advance

:D

For what it's worth, I have used these on mine. I questioned the guy in the hardware store about heat etc and he told me "they are used in central heating systems which get pretty hot, so they should be fine". I figured he had a good point, so went ahead and used them. He may be wrong.

also, I would have thought that they wouldn't get that hot as the heat will be rising up out of the drum, just a thought...

Where you get the lid from

Got the lid by chance from a friend who had just upgraded their bbq to a Weber 47" kettle. It's very much like one of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Landmann-Stainl ... B004OR6C16

but it was 22" and came with a kettle lid. The lid itself is a tiny bit too small to fit over the lip of the drum, so I'll need to 'encourage' it I think. So I've also got the grill and the coal grate to use :)

As I'm making two I also bought one of these to be sacrificed:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190770431221? ... 1439.l2649

The lid on this is actually a tiny bit bigger than the drum, but it stays on the lip if that makes sense? ie there's about 3-5mm of travel laterally.

:D
