All landowners want safe sensible shots if they allow shooting on their land.
Not trigger happy wannabe Rambo's, shooting is about discipline, practice and most of all safety!!!!!
The deer on my land are shot by a insured stalker, who is a local gamekeeper and a crack shot, my land has been checked out as suitable for this shooting by the firearms officer.

Landowners prefer insured shooters on their land for obvious reasons, hence joining a club will enable you to get this, and give you the practice to become a proficient shot.

I am a BASC member - hence insured. Not done any game shooting, but will be doing a round of English sporting tomorrow I'm well aware of the safety and ethical aspects though.

Ask some local farmers for permission to shoot on their ground.
Sorry, but when people who I only speak via the internet get interested in guns/shooting I think SAFETY/SAFETY.

Indeed - I'm fairly new to shooing clays, and the safety aspects are certainly hammered into you when you first learn to shoot. To be honest I would not currently be interested in shooting game which required a FAC. Pigeons and rabbits would be my limit for the moment - hence my question about your air rifle. The alternative is using a shotgun and dealing with he shot. I hear that 6's aren't so bad.

Buy a good quality air rifle, get some good sights, range it in and practice, get used to the gun, then practice some more, That is what I had to do.
Dont worry about getting a FAC air rifle, too much grief for the effort, plus you need much heavier pellets.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly - too much effort to get FAC. The club I shoot clays at has an air rifle range, though I believe it legal to do some plinking in your home garden. Not sure what the neighbours will make of that though!

Got any recommendations on a non-FAC springer?

As best as I recall it is illegal to shoot an air weapon within 15 metres of a road. I understand some Police Forces will allow indoor shooting in a properly modified brick built garage. To be on the safe side chat to one of the coaches and get some leaflets from your club

Try a Weihrauch HK 77, my personal weapon of choice( Bond Moment ).
Powerfull, well engineered, but very heavy, solid dependable gun.
But I have not bought an Air rifle in years this one still does the job, mucho changes since then?
