I've just come back from my butcher's and he said he sold them for £4.20 when he has them

£14 is I think for French farmed rabbits.

The wild ones are a different animal really and much cheaper.

£14 for wild would be ludicrous, you could get grouse for that.

I think it depends on where you are in the country, a couple of years ago I'd asked my butcher and he was on about £14 for UK rabbits, a week or so later we were in Ludlow and they were practically giving them away in the market and a brace were £3.50 at one of the many, many butchers shops.

I think you're spot on Keith. I supply my local butcher and a local pie shop with rabbits. The butcher sells them on at £4.20 as he has a direct ready source at very low cost. If you were in a less rural spot without local supplies, looking at what game dealers charge, I can understand how the price can be hiked up.

I was born and brought up in Ludlow, there's a good game butchers there in the centre of town next to the spar shop (used to be Woolies in my youth). I normally see wild rabbit for £5 or less, certainly wouldn't pay more.

We've been to Ludlow a few times now for the Medieval Christmas Festivites, I can honestly say I've NEVER seen so many butchers and delis in one square in my life, not to mention the stalls in the market. All being well we'll be there next year if we can get B&B.

Coincidentally for the past 3 years I've been in Ludlow on the weekend of the Medieval Christmas fayre meeting up with old school friends.
