I think it was circa 91 at my brothers house on a cheapo open grill and we spit roasted a chicken. Did the typical British grilling thing (sausages, burgers, kebabs, chicken pieces) until about 3 years ago. Then one day out of the blue decided that I didn't want to do that anymore. So we had an asian themed grilling session without a sausage or burger insight. That really opened the floodgates - going from 1 grill to 8 grills & 2 smokers over the next few years. Now at least grill once or twice a week. Though the family are a bit dubious about the number of cookers I now have all enjoy the results.

Mid 80's, would have been around 6 or 7. My parents got hooked on cooking over charcoal after holidaying in the Greek islands for the first time.
Remember my dad buying a BBQ from B&Q, lots of swearing followed during assembly because it really was a piece of crap. That BBQ lasted years mind you, the main things that were cooked on it were souvlaki and my mum's honey, soy and spring onion kebabs. The occasional banger and burger was done when entertaining but not very often.

I cant remember the first but generally lots of split spare ribs grilled crispy over a hibachi my parents used to have, potatoes in foil in the embers, and delia smiths bbq sauce, which seemed t be soy sauce, raw chopped garlic, orange juice and honey. Used to love that stuff and have it on bacon daily when i ws at uni.
My current passion probably stems from trying to get those ribs better! Oh and i used to be a total pyro when i was a kid.

keith157 wrote:Despite certain member's prejudices you can quite happily BBQ UK style on gas, it's economical and relatively clean.
You can even do this in the comfort of your kitchen, Some modern grills will ignite at the push of a button.

my first BBQ memories would be circa 1973 . Cumberland sausage rings and beef rissoles cooked on big charcoal grills at ''The Koiona Coffee Shop'' [ a youth club dance organised by the Methodist Church ]. I can remember wearing half mast tonic Stay-press with red braces, red socks and shiny brogues, red gingham Ben Sherman and a Prince of Wales Crombie. I had a side parting shaved into my Number 1 and I thought I was one super cool 12 year old skinhead. We skanked the evening away to our Trojan Reggae Chartbusters albums and I can still remember that first smell of meat cooking over coals....oh yeah, and my first ever finger pie...
