Lumpwood charcoal - how to do it? keep it going?

Postby baggister » 08 May 2016, 17:46

Hi all,

I've bought a bag of big K lumpwood charcoal.

Im using a weber medium kettle

After getting it started, I found that the lumpwood kind of crumbled, was very delicate, almost turned to dust. It didn't last long at all. I ended up using the kitchen grill.

Is it supposed to do this? Is there a technique for keeping it going for an hour or two?

This is just normal barbecuing. nothing fancy: some lamb chops, sausages etc.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Thanks v much

No, it shouldn't break up that much. Where did you get it from? I would complain. Should burn for hours.

Cheers EssesxSmoker ... Big K, bought from Waitrose.
quite brittle, some big lumps, some tiny lumps. So tiny, they happily fall through the gaps of the bottom grill.

You will always get some breakage and even dust. If half the bag is smashed up I'd take it back.
