Thermometer For Around £20 - Recommendations?
Thermometer For Around £20 - Recommendations?
I see that the Maverick ET732 and ETI Superfast Thermopen are highly recommended around here. However, at circa £40 and £50 respectively, they are a tad out of my budget. I'm looking to spend in the region of £20 for a digital thermometer which I can use on the grill and in the kitchen.
This Mastrad seems to get good reviews on Amazon and is within budget. Has anyone used one before? I'm not sure if I want a thermometer on a cable or merely a probe.
Can anyone recommend a digital thermometer that is well made, accurate, easy to read, will last the test of time and all for around £20?

I will have a hunt around for you, I have used many over the years but will have to check out the brands, why not enter the IBQN recipe comp, we have only have a few entries and there is a thermapen up for grabs every month! http://ibqn.com/?page_id=141

I've got a couple of Zyliss ones I picked up for a tenner from Debenhams. They've proved to be very reliable for the money, with the added bonus of having silicone coated probe leads that don't get snagged.
I would recommend getting a Thermapen at some point though. They do seem expensive at first glance, but are well worth the money as nothing else comes close performance wise.

I recommend these very highly [better than Maverick] but ultimately use a thermapen

Do many of you cook with a thermometer in your meat and wait for the beeper to ring to inform you once the meat is cooked? Or do you tend to take your meat out of the oven to check it with a probe?

I have a unit similar to that which Joker showed for oven use (I've been oven cooking to temp rather than time for yonks) but have a Maverick for outdoor/bbq use as I like the remote viewing aspect of it.
However once it has reached whatever temp I've set I check with a Thermopen, I even do this with the oven probe.

I'd save the extra cash and buy the thermapen, you will end up buying one in the end I'm sure, might as well save yourself £20 in the process.

Just found the superfast thermapen on eBay for £28.00

Just make sure it is a Superfast and not the older FR5 model.
