what size of bolts do people use to hold cooking grates?
M6 or M8

I was thinking of using ring nuts, and then put a small bracket on my charcoal basket with a bolt sticking down. I could then put this into the lower grate and use uds as a grill

Steve,

Do you use 3 or 4 bolts for each grate?

3 bolts mean that you never get any rock if your rate warps, whereas 4 means you will?

I have four but when I build my next one I'll only put three in. I was worried three wouldn't be strong enough but in hindsight I think it would have been fine.

How you doing your intakes, with pipe nipples? I never found suitable back nuts in either stainless or black iron. The nipples I got were bspt and the taper screwed me on that front. To be fair I ended up just threading my nipples in through the barrel and they've been fine.

How you planning to cut your vent holes too? I used a screw in punch which worked really well, don't know if it would do 2mm steel though.

My dad has loads of tools, including a magnetic drill that should be able to drill a hole big enough. Because its 2mm steel, I should be able to weld a nipple into the hole, so if worse came to worse i could burn a hole out.

Its just a mater of collecting all the bits and getting on with it now!!

Looking good. Fantastic you got your drum shot blasted, much easier than burning then grinding it out.

I've just decommissioned my UDS as I'm using te drum for another little project. Would like to get myself a stainless drum for my next one, will be keeping my eye out on eBay
