Does anyone _not_ put sugar in their dry rub?

I have a bit of an aversion to sugar - and make my rubs (no specific recipe, just wing it every time I make some up) have none in them. I still get a bark of sorts and was wondering if anyone else didn't put sugar.

I do put sugar in the BBQ sauce - but that's usually on the side - so optional when you eat.

This Alton Brown recipe doesn't use sugar in the rub, although it does use it in a brine:

I'm not sure how much that will penetrate the meat, but I'll let you know in a few hrs, as I've got it on the go right now :)

No I rarely put sugar in the dry rubs I make, generally the bbq sauce (if used) is sweet enough.
