Using different woods for smoking

Hi all,
When it comes to using different woods for smoking is it ok to use kiln dried wood (beech, maple, oak, maybe cherry every now and then) put on top of briquettes just for that bit more smokey taste? Should I soak it in water or just chuck it on? The reason I ask is I can get these offcuts from work, would I be wasting my time? Cheers all
