Good Evening.
I have got 2 oil drums that have been cut in half and with angles on the top for the grill, I have been looking for advice on how far up the barrel the platform should be so there is enough heat coming from the charcoals to cook the food, without burning the food and not wasting the coals..
Any help much appreciated.

When you say platform, what do you mean? The grill for the food or a grate for the coals?

Not sure what you mean is it a horizontal barrel q? If they are in in half then your food grate (platform) will be mounted in the centre or half way mark of the whole barrle. other half being the lid. coals need to be low in the bottom if you are doing hot n fast. if not you need to offset coals.
put 50mm of sharp sand in the bottomif you cannot get a narrow coal grate. If its a uds style keep below 10 to 12 inches usually around first ring on drum
