Durkee Famous Sauce

Postby lakemirror » 19 Aug 2010, 02:11

This is my favorite condiment for sandwiches made from leftover turkey on Boxing Day. Has anyone seen it here in the UK?

Thanks for any leads.....

If ever anyone finds this sauce in their supermarket, here is a great use for it:

Lake Alfred Chicken BBQ Sauce - from an old family friend

Plenty for 4 leg quarters or a dozen thighs:

1/2 lb butter
2 cups water
1/2 cup vinegar
juice of 2 lemons
1 tsp prepared mustard
2 tsps sugar
1 bottle 10 oz Durkees Famous Sauce.
Tabasco
Worcestershire sauce
salt and pepper to taste

Melt butter in large saucepan. Add remaining ingredients. Baste chicken in sauce toward the end of cooking time to prevent burning

Notes: Lake Alfred is a small, rural town in central Florida about 5 miles from me. I use less butter than called for by about half, just my preference. I use a light-color vinegar to avoid darkening the color of the finished sauce. Reserve some of this sauce for use at the table. This stuff is delicious....very tangy. Piquant, even.

The shop is less than five minutes from Toby's house. Unfortunately it's expensive because the stuff is all shipped in. However you can get some stuff there that's not available elsewhere.

Sad to say, I have never seen or heard of it, and I live in the US  I see it is carried in the Kroger supermarkets, which is where we shop most of the time. Since I hadn't heard of it, I tried a web search and found this DFS Substitute recipe:

SAUCE RECIPE FOR SANDWICHES
Durkee Famous Sandwich and Salad Sauce Substitute
Try this inexpensive to make sandwich spread recipe on subs, burgers, turkey and ALL sandwiches.
* No it's not Durkee but it's good!

Ingredients
½ teaspoon onion powder (McCormick Brand)
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon Dijon Mustard (Kroger Brand)
1 cup Best Buy Real Mayonnaise (Kroger Brand)
3 tablespoon plain yogurt
2 tablespoon juice from a dill pickle jar (Vlasic Brand)

Method
Mix all ingredients as listed until smooth. Chill in refrigerator, in a covered container for several hours or overnight. Stir lightly before using.

Here is another:

Exported from MasterCook *

Durkee’s Famous Sauce (Copycat)

Recipe By :
Serving Size : 16 Preparation Time :0:00
Categories : Sauces Cheese/Eggs

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
-----WALDINE VAN GEFFEN VGHC42A-----
1/2 cup Cold water
4 tablespoons Cornstarch
1/2 cup Plus 2 TB dark vinegar
2 tablespoons Salt
1/2 cup Sugar
1 Whole egg
4 tablespoons French’s prepared mustard
4 tablespoons Margarine -- tiny bits

Place all ingredients as listed in blender on high speed until smooth (2
minutes). Transfer to top of double boiler and cook over gently boiling
water, stirring often for 12 to 15 minutes or until thickened and smooth.
Once more put mixture back through blender 30 seconds or till smooth,
using high speed. Refrigerate in covered container 24 hours before using.
Keep refrigerated 3 months. Source: Gloria Pitzers' Make Alike Recipes.

Sometimes copycat recipes are better than the store-bought ones. Like Bisquick -- we have a copycat that produces much fluffier pancakes and biscuits.
