Okay, the Lidl (remote receiver) is a neat piece of kit, obviously designed for indoors, but it worked from a ziplok bag in the garden so that's that problem solved. It has been set up to work within a range of temperatures, the lowest (fish) is 131F the highest (well done beef) 176F. However it can be manually set from -47 to 300C. Checked against the trusty Thermapen it was 1 degree C out. There is also a 99 minute countdown facility.
The Aldi (stick thermometer) was matching the pen exactly and although I didn't time it it was very quick to read, probably quicker (it seemed) then my Weber stick. It has a rubber cover for the point which is good if you want to carry it around with you.
Both will read C & F so all in all not too shabby to start off with.
