OK, thanks all, appreciated. One final question (I promise!): within Weber kettles there is a One Touch, a One Touch Premium and a Master Touch. Is the extra for the Premium or Master worth it?

Thanks for your contributions! Much appreciated. I think a wifi-controlled electric pellet smoker is probably a bit elaborate for now, but let's see where his new hobby takes me! I think I'll most likely experiment with slow and low on the Weber Kettle. But...

Thanks Keith. I know them well! I went to sixth form college round here and the Cabbage Patch was the post-exam venue for the whole college. I've also drunk in the White Swan a lot and can never decide if I prefer there or the Barmy Arms!
